BEING LATE IS JUST RUDE.

BEING LATE IS JUST RUDE.

Patrick Blog Pics Small Watch

I’m late.

I’m late for a very important date.

No time to say “Hello”, “Goodbye”

I’m Late, I’m late, I’m  late.

The opening lines of the White Rabbit’s ” I’m late scene ” in Alice in Wonderland. For so many people in modern day fast paced living, this could be their theme song.

I’m surrounded by lateness. I’ve rushed to get the children to school in time, and just get them through the school gate when the siren goes. (We don’t have a school bell, we have a siren.) As I walk back to the car, people are still on their way to school. They are strolling along, not at all concerned that they are late. The Spanish culture is so laid back. But not only the Spanish. In our little village that has a very mixed multi cultural community, even the Germans are TARDY.

TARDY……I know its an old fashioned word, but I think its a word we need to put back into our day to day vocabulary. BEING LATE IS JUST RUDE….TARDY, shows such disrespect for the people around us.

MUSICAL LATENESS:

For us as working musicians, this is one of the things that can make us STAND OUT FROM THE REST. Musicians generally don’t have the best reputation for punctuality. However if we want to be successful at earning a living as a musician, we need to WORK HARD at being better than the others. Not just being skilled at our instruments, having a good repertoire, but just generally PAYING ATTENTION TO DETAILS. Yes being on time is hard work. But it is also a DECISION, and an ATTITUDE.

STARTING THE GIG ON TIME.

Getting to the gig with plenty of time to set up, and also allowing a few minuets for the occasional technical problem.THEN….start punctually at the time you are booked to start at. If you do this regularly, and the other musicians who work the other nights at the venue, are not punctual, be sure the bosses will take notice of you.

Many of my audience are repeat customer. Many come on holiday for a month at a time. Many I have known for the last 8 years. I need to get to work at least half an hour earlier on arrival days, or day before departure days, if I want to start on time.

WATCH THE CLOCK ON YOUR BREAK.

The normal, accepted break time for musicians is 15 minutes between sets. Musicians are also notorious for stretching their breaks between sets. If you watch the clock during your break, and consistently start punctually after 15 minutes. Your bosses will notice.

In this day and age, we have to work so hard and engaging an audience..getting their attention, and keeping their attention. I find that at many venues I don’t take a break. If I take a break I’ve lost my audience, and I need to start all over again at engaging them.

BEING LATE IS JUST RUDE. I’m irritated by lateness around me. But when I’m late staring at a gig, I get really irritated with myself. Its time to check my ATTITUDE. Make the DECISION to be on time the next gig. Time to get back into the HABIT of being on time.

IF YOU HAVE THE TIME……….

I leave you with the full transcription of the White Rabbits “I’m late” scene

I’M LATE.

I’m late, I’m late for a very important date

No time to say “Hello”, “Goodbye”

I’m late, I’m late, I’m late, I’m late

And when I wave, I lose the time I save

My fuzzy ears and whiskers

Took me too much time to shave

I run and then I hop, hop, hop

I wish that I could fly

There’s danger if I dare to stop

And here’s the reason why You see, I’m overdue,

I’m in a rabbit stew

Can’t even say “Goodbye”, “Hello”

I’m late, I’m late, I’m late

Good morning Mister Chatterbox

I’d love to stop and chatter

But in six and seven-eighth minutes

I must meet with the Mad Hatter

The mad, mad, mad, Mad Hatter

We must chat about a very important matter

I’m late, I’m late for a very important date

No time to say “Hello”, “Goodbye”

I’m late, I’m late, I’m late,

I’m late And when I wave, I lose the time I save

My fuzzy ears and whiskers Took me too much time to shave

I run and then I hop, hop, hop

I wish that I could fly

There’s danger if I dare to stop

And here’s the reason why You see,

I’m overdue, I’m in a rabbit stew

Can’t even say “Goodbye”, “Hello”

I’m late, I’m late, I’m late…

PUNCTUALITY.

Being late is just rude, starting the gig on time, punctuality, tardiness
